Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Optional Practical Training provides the student the opportunity to obtain training in their area of study either during studies on a part-time basis or full-time training with the completion of their program.
In order to qualify for OPT, the student must make an I-765 application to USCIS for an Employment Authorization Document. The student must request an OPT I-20 for submission with the I-765 application.
The Office of International Programs requires that the student’s academic advisor signs the Request for Optional Practical Training which documents the student’s academic status prior to issuing the OPT I-20.
Once the EAD is issued, the student may work within his/her area of study, for any employer. Employment authorization is limited to the dates listed on the EAD card.
