Dependents

Study

Some dependent classifications are eligible to study at will. These classifications include H-4, J-2, L-2, O-3, TD, and minor children enrolled in grades K-12.If the program of study requires employment, such as clinical practice training, a graduate assistantship, or an internship, it will be necessary for the student to change to the appropriate category of either F-1 or J-1, unless the student has a valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD).

Dependents in F-2 status are restricted, however, to non-degree part-time study only.

Please note that J classifications, J-1 and J-2, prohibit patient care and are therefore inappropriate for numerous programs at KUMC. Students intending to study in a program with a clinical component must obtain an appropriate visa classification.

Employment

Although J-2 and L-2 spouses usually may work, either part-time or full-time, they are required first to obtain an EAD in order to be employed. This process takes three months. An EAD is needed in order to apply for a Social Security Number, which then takes two to three weeks to obtain. J-2 and L-2 dependents who will need to work as a part of their program should begin the process of applying for the EAD as soon as possible.

F-2, H-4, O-3 and TD dependents are not eligible for employment.
