Basic Requirements for Maintaining Student Status

The following information is designed to assist internationals with maintaining their status while in the U.S. For answers to specific questions not found on this site, please contact an Immigration Advisor.

  • Maintain current, valid I-20, DS2019, or other document establishing eligibility for your status.
  • Maintain current, valid Form I-94 in your passport, which should also be current at all times.
  • Maintain fulltime enrollment Fall and Spring semesters and during Summer semester if your program requires it.
  • Do not enroll at any institution other than KUMC without prior authorization from the Office of International Programs. If you intend to transfer in or out, including a change of program or degree level, or if you intend to leave the U.S., please notify the Office of International Programs.
  • Report any changes of address for yourself or your dependents to the Office of International Programs, and the Registrar. USCIS regulations require that we have on file your physical, residential address, telephone number, and other contact information.
  • Do not work without authorization from the Office of International Programs. Employment from all sources is limited to 20 hours per week during sessions and 40 hours per week during official school and program breaks. USCIS defines employment as any services performed which are compensated in any way, e.g.,wages, tuition reduction or waiver, stipend,  housing, "in-kind," etc.
  • Depart the US within 60 days of completing your program requirements. If you are a J-1 student, departure should be within 30 days of program completion. If you are withdrawing or have withdrawn from your program, departure should be within 15 days of your last date of participation.
