KUMC is authorized by the US Department of State to sponsor exchange visitors in four categories. These categories include Research Scholars, Professors, Short-term Scholars, and Students. For information regarding the Student category, please refer to the International Student section of this website. Below is an overview of participation requirements of this program. For questions regarding information not seen on this site, please contact an Immigration Advisor.
Program Activity
The Research Scholar, Professor, and Short-term Scholar categories are designed for international professors and research scholars to engage in research, teaching, and lecturing with American colleagues. These individuals should therefore have the degrees and experience normally required for the type of activity in which they participate. An exchange visitor may not hold nor be a candidate for a tenured or tenure-track position. Additionally, patient care is prohibited under any category sponsored by KUMC, regardless of the Visitor's qualifications.
English
Program sponsors are required by the Department of State to ensure that a Visitor is sufficiently proficient in the English language to participate in the designated activity before entering the United States.
Insurance
Exchange visitors and any J-2 dependents accompanying them are required to carry medical insurance at the minimum levels set by the Department of State. As a program sponsor, KUMC is required to monitor participants' compliance.
Non-KUMC Activity
Outside professional or compensated activities may be undertaken only with the prior approval of the KUMC Responsible Officer.
