Research Scholar & Professor
The Research Scholar category is for individuals who will be primarily engaged in research, though some teaching duties are permissible. The minimum program length is six months, while the maximum is five years with this program being completed in any increment. Extensions are allowed up to the five-year limit. Individuals who have held J-1 status during the 24 months prior to the start date are ineligible for a new program.
The Professor category is for individuals who will be primarily engaged in teaching, though some research duties are permissible. The minimum program length is six months, while the maximum length is five-years with this program being completed in any increment. Extensions are allowed up to the five-year limit. Individuals who have held J-1 status during the 24 months prior to the start date are ineligible for a new program.
Please note that time limitations include all time spent in any J status (J-1 or J-2). A J-2 dependent that is subsequently granted a change of status to J-1 does not have five years available after the change of status. The time remaining for J-1 status would now equal five years less the time spent as a J-2 dependent.
Short-term Scholar
The Short-term Scholar category is for the purpose of lecturing, observing, consulting, training, or demonstrating special skills. Program length is from one day to six months. Extensions cannot be made beyond the six-month maximum for this category.
Trainee and Intern
KUMC does not currently participate in these programs. To sponsor someone as a trainee or intern, the department will have to contact an independent organization approved by the Department of State for sponsorship.
