Other Short-term International Students

For those students, who are currently enrolled in a degree seeking program at a university outside the United States, we offer the opportunity to visit the KUMC campus to study, observe, and learn new skills or techniques or research methodologies.  This short-term program is available to students at all university levels including undergraduate and graduate students. Please note that this program is for short-term study only and most programs do not exceed four (4) months in duration.  For those students who are wishing to do more extensive research associated with completion of their thesis there are other programs available.

To enter this program the student must first identify a mentor and department that is willing to sponsor the student. The mentor and the student must then identify and outline a specific program for the student.  The learning experience will tailored to the student’s level and needs but may include: learning to utilize a variety of basic biochemical and molecular biology laboratory skills; develop the ability to independently formulate a testable experimental hypothesis; design experiments to test formulated hypothesis in a classic application of the scientific method.  Progress of the student will be monitored through regular meetings with members of the research lab and/or their mentor.

The student must complete the International Short-Term Science Student Application Packet.  This includes:

1) The application

2) A completed Affidavit of Support with supporting financial documents. The program requires that you have available $1000 for each month of your program.

3) Communication from the KUMC department outlining the proposed plan of study

4) A letter from the Dean of Students from the student’s university, verifying the student’s standing

5) A non-refundable application fee of $300 USD. This fee may be paid by bank check or money order only and must be made payable to the Office of International Programs. No additional fees or tuition are required.

6) Completion of a Student Medical History Record. This form must be reviewed and approved by the KUMC Student Health Coordinator prior to application approval.

7) Once accepted, the student must provide proof of health, medical evacuation and repatriation insurance.

Applications should be received a minimum of three months prior to the requested start date.  Though TOEFL scores are not required, the student should have language skills sufficient to communicate effectively in the lab they will be visiting.

Students in this program are eligible to live in the International House during their program. However space in the House is limited and applications are processed on a first come first serve basis.  If accommodations in the House are not available, students will be responsible for finding their own housing.

Students attending KUMC through this program must enter the US on a Student Visa (F1 or J1).  Once accepted into the program, KUMC will prepare the necessary document (I-20 or DS2019) for the student to apply for a visa.  If there are any delays in obtaining a visa, you must contact KUMC Office of International Programs immediately.
