A limited number of senior medical students from international schools are accepted for elective clerkships at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). Applicants may not be U.S. citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents.

Requirements

1. At the time of their elective, students must be in their final year of study at their own medical school and cannot have received their M.D.
2. The student must have completed specific clinical training as follows - eight weeks each of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Psychiatry.
3. Each clinical elective module is four weeks. Students are required to stay for the complete module. International students are limited to no more than two modules. This policy is strictly adhered to by our School of Medicine. Pay close attention to module start and end dates as all electives begin on a Monday. Be sure to indicate the first choice, as well as three alternative elective choices.
4. Students must arrive the Thursday prior to the module start date to allow sufficient time to register, contact the elective department (s), view the campus, and get settled into the living quarters.
5. Students must depart Kansas City on the last Saturday of the module in order to vacate the International House for new incoming students. Please note: The module calendar will indicate that students have to be in clinics until 1:00 p.m. on the departure Saturday. Exceptions are made for international students. Please schedule your flights on this date.
6. Applications must be received a minimum of four months prior to the requested elective start date. If you are accepted for an elective, you must come to KUMC on a F-1 visa. KUMC will issue an I-20 and a copy of Form I-901 for use when paying the SEVIS fee. Note that when a student has been accepted into a clinical elective, that elective may not be changed. Registration into a clinic assumes the student will be available for the entire clinic. Changes to a rotation may leave a clinic short-staffed. Available electives may be viewed here.
7. A letter from the student's Dean of Students regarding academic standing and clinical experience is required.
8. All senior international students applying for electives at KUMC whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency through either the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the academic format of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). International applicants who are citizens of Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or the English-speaking provinces of Canada do not have to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Note: The TOEFL or IELTS must have been taken within two years of arrival at KUMC. Original test scores must be sent directly from the administering agency to KUMC. Photocopies will not be accepted. For testing purposes, the ETS school code for KUMC is 6895.

Please refer to the following chart for English-proficiency scores on theTOEFL and the IELTS. Note, there is no separate essay score on the TOEFL-IBT as the essay score is included in the Writing score. Although the TOEFL-IBT includes a Speaking component, a minimum score is not required.

9. A non-refundable application/registration fee of $300 USD is required and must be enclosed with the application. This fee may be paid by bank check or money order only and must be made payable to the Office of International Programs. No additional fees are required.
10. Completion of a Student Medical History Record is required. This form must be reviewed and approved by our Student Health Coordinator prior to elective approval. Please review the KUMC policy regarding TB Skin Tests.
11. If accepted, a student must provide proof of health, medical evacuation and repatriation insurances. Please follow this link for more information.
12. Proper attire for KUMC senior medical students includes dress pants, a dress shirt, and a tie for males. Females may wear a calf-length skirt or dress pants with a blouse. This is the acceptable attire unless specified by the department. Short white coats will be provided. These are worn by all medical students at KUMC.
13. In order to ensure that all inbound international students are available for clinics in a timely manner, KUMC requires that students stay at the International House. Please refer to this section for more information.
