Academic English Requirements and Resources

All applicants for study at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) whose native language is not English must demonstrate an established level of English language proficiency through either the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the academic format of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). The test must have been taken within two years of the first semester of enrollment. When submitting test scores to KUMC, please submit only original scores sent directly from the testing agency. Photocopies will not be accepted. For testing purposes, the ETS school code is 6895.

The following table explains the TOEFL and IELTS requirements graduate programs at KU Medical Center.  Please note that some departments have more demanding or rigorous language requirements.  Please check out Graduate Studies website to find the specific language requirements for the department to which you are applying.

Note that there is no separate essay score on the internet-based TOEFL as essay scores are included in the Writing score. Although the internet-based TOEFL includes a Speaking component, a minimum score on the Speaking section is not required.

Waiving the TOEFL Requirements

For applicants whose native language is not English, the Dean of Graduate Studies may consider and grant exceptions to the minimum English proficiency requirements on a case-by-case basis for these two circumstances:

Applicants who have earned Bachelor's or higher degrees from English-speaking accredited institutions in the US, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or the English-speaking provinces of Canada.

Applicants who have earned Bachelor's or higher degrees from a foreign institution where the language of instruction was English. Documentation that the school's language of instruction was English must be provided to consider granting this waiver.

Applicants from India and other recent British colonies do need to submit TOEFL scores, even if English is their primary language.
