Teaching Conferences:

Residents alternate between the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics and have the same responsibilities as their peers in either specialty. Since it is expected that residents who complete this program will be "double-boarded", all Med/Peds residents are required to take the same In-Training examinations and attend the same educational conferences as do the categorical residents in Medicine or Pediatrics.

Medicine/Pediatrics Resident Conference:

Medicine/Pediatric Residents meet on a monthly basis to discuss topics that span the Pediatric and Internal Medicine scope of practice under the guidance of the program director and other faculty. This conference uses a problem-based approach prepared by a senior resident.

An annual Med/Peds Retreat is held with the goal to introduce issues that are important to "Life after Residency".

Medicine:

While on medicine rotations, the Med/Peds resident is expected to attend all scheduled medicine conferences.

  • Morning Report is held Monday through Friday for all house staff at each teaching facility by the respective Chair. Cases are presented and discussed by house staff with teaching points made by faculty.
  • Teaching and patient management rounds with the ward physician usually follow Morning Report at each hospital.
  • There are didactic Conferences on a daily basis, that cover a wide range of topics relevant to house staff and student education in Internal Medicine. These include a medical emergency series, CPC's, resident presentations, and journal clubs.
  • Medical Grand Rounds take place on Wednesday mornings in place of morning report.

All Department of Medicine Conferences at KUMC are televised to the KCVAMC.

More detailed information may be found in the Medicine Residency site.

Pediatrics:

While on pediatric rotations, the Med/Peds resident is expected to attend all scheduled pediatric conferences.

  • The daily Morning Report involves the discussion of a case with development of a differential diagnosis and a plan for further evaluation and management. Faculty physicians attend Morning Report and guide the discussion.
  • During teaching rounds, faculty physicians discuss individual patients admitted to their specific pediatrics services.
  • Weekly Grand Attending Rounds give faculty physicians the opportunity to present in-depth discussions about one patient admitted to the wards within the last month. This is usually done in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • The weekly Grand Rounds feature presentations by outside lecturers or faculty members from either the Department of Pediatrics or other departments within the Medical Center.
  • The weekly Radiology Conference, led by a pediatric radiologist, reviews all interesting x-rays taken the previous week.
  • Other instructional meetings include:
    • Journal club -- in which house staff and faculty discuss key pediatric or medical journal articles;
    • Ethics conference -- in which the pediatric ethicist leads a dialogue about an ethics issue;
    • Mortality and Morbidity conference -- in which a patient admitted within the past few months is discussed;
    • Resident's conference -- which provides an exercise in scholarship and critical thinking regarding the world literature in clinical pediatrics.

Every Thursday afternoon the residents are excused from clinical duties to attend the required Core Curriculum lectures or discussions led by the faculty physicians. In addition, one hour of this time is devoted to Pediatric PREP review to help prepare the residents for Pediatric Boards.

More detailed information, and a graphic representation of the Pediatric schedule, can be found in the Pediatric Residency site.
