In-House Call:

Medicine:

In-house call is usually no more than every fifth night at KUMC and KCVAMC. A night float system covers the in-house night call for the ward services during the week and only weekend calls are covered by the resident on these services during the month. Residents on elective months have no call during that month.

The exception is for the supervising residents in the Medical ICU and Cardiac ICU rotations at KUMC. In-house call on these two rotations is every fourth night.

Pediatrics:

In-house call is every fourth night while on inpatient services for interns. In-house call for the ward and the PICU is covered by senior resident on a "Night Senior" or "Night Float" month during the week. The weekends are covered by the the seniors on the floor resulting in four calls per month on average while on the ward or PICU service.

There is usually a Senior resident and sometimes a Junior resident on call in the Neonatal ICU, and a Senior resident with one or two Junior residents in house for the Pediatric ICU and General Wards.

In-house call is less frequent while on outpatient and elective rotations.

Free Time:

Both departments guarantee all residents an average of one day off per week.
