Our learning spaces at the University of Kansas Medical Center are designed to accommodate mobility and flexibility of student-centered learning activities based on SCALE-UP and TEAL pedagogies. These spaces are carefully designed with flexible furniture and technology to facilitate interactions both for large and small classrooms and individual/group study spaces. In these spaces, students are engaged in hands-on learning activities or simulations not only within the KUMC learning spaces but also are able to engage with peers via ITV and web conferencing tools to our campuses in Salina and Wichita. The learning spaces are equipped with similar and equitable technologies ranging from ITV capabilities, interactive displays, upgraded wireless bandwidth, recording appliances, and use of Catch Boxes (toss-able microphones).

The goal of these learning spaces is to provide faculty and students the flexibility of instruction and learning styles and encourage more student-centered instruction. As much research is being done over the past few years on learning spaces, there's been much discussion, evaluation, and research of the role of lecture and its place in the classroom and online courses.  Depending on variables, such as class size, discipline, instructor's teaching philosophy, etc. other strategies (i.e. Active Learning, Flipped Classroom, Learner-Centered, and POGIL - just to name a few) have surfaced with some being highly adopted and recommended in our learning spaces.

Active Learning

This approach allows students to "learn by doing," where students use their critical thinking skills to address the activity rather than watch or listen to a recording or lecture.  One way instructors might promote this approach would be assigning a learning activity such as a reflection assignment which would have students read, discuss, and write.  This would allow students to use their critical thinking skills and help focus the student on realizing their own attitudes and values rather on just transmitting knowledge.

Flipped Classroom

This method expects students to prepare for learning activities by watching videos or reading articles and book chapters outside of class. This "flip" will allow students to analyze/synthesize the content within instruction time instead of individual work outside of class by way of discussions or collaborative learning activities (Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Team-Based Learning (TBL), unstructured group case studies, etc.)

Learner Centered

This strategy allows instructors to share learning space with students where students are given control of their learning.  The role of the instructor changes from having to orchestrate the learning for the students by allowing them to take control and become self-directed learners instead.

Technology in Learning Spaces

The design of a classroom represents the philosophy of the institution. A standard lecture hall, with rows of immovable chairs facing the front, supports the learning philosophy of the "sage on the stage", who is simply responsible for distributing information to an audience. An active and collaborative teaching philosophy requires an active and collaborative Learning Space. Open floor plans with mobile furniture allow for group work, whole-class discussions, and individual learning.

KUMC's Learning Spaces were designed with technology in mind. Each room has wall-mounted displays equipped to allow both the instructor and the students to share their screens with the class. Larger rooms have multiple displays designed to allow for flexible arrangement of the room computers. Recording is available in all of the rooms. Ample access to power outlets supports the use of laptops or tablets by all students in any room layout.

Requesting Learning Spaces

KUMC Learning Spaces are highly diverse to support many pedagogical and technological needs. Many of our rooms have flexible furniture to accommodate collaborative, student-centered learning, while we still offer many traditional lecture halls.
