Purchasing Computers for Work Use

Hardware

  • Hewlett-Packard (HP) Elite (desktops)
  • HP Elitebooks (portable)
  • HP tablets

Select Hewlett-Packard (HP) personal computers (Elite desktops and Elitebook laptops) running the current release of Microsoft Windows are standard for personal computing at KU Medical Center.

Current standard desktop (HP Elite) and portable (HP Elitebook) computers are always at KU Medical Center's customized HP Store. Faculty and staff who wish to browse current computers and peripherals in the HP Store can do so at http://www.hp.com/buy/kumc_quote. You may select, configure, and create an electronic price quotation for your system of choice; then work with your department administrator or purchaser to order it.

Elite desktops and Elitebook laptops with standard configurations should meet the Windows platform needs of almost all KU Medical Center faculty and staff.  If you have a unique need for which you cannot identify a suitable HP computer, contact the Assistant Director of Customer Support at 8-4807.  KUMC Purchasing will not process purchase orders for non-standard computers without approval of the Department of Information Resources.

Note that new desktop PCs should have the necessary ethernet jacks and power outlets available in the desired space.

Standard HP computers are supported by the Jayhawk Tech Clinic (IT Help Desk) from the perspectives of:

  • Network connectivity
  • Off-site (remote) access
  • Help Desk
  • Hardware problem resolution (note: all standard computers come with 3-year warranties)
  • Training and consultation
  • As appropriate, assistance with the development of software, web documents, and other information management tools and resources

Some software applications, particularly those used in research areas, may require an alternative platform (Macintosh, Linux, UNIX).  All such platforms are supported from the perspective of network connectivity.  Consult with the Department of Information Resources about specific support needs you may have.

Software

All of the following are provided without charge to all KUMC faculty and staff for business (that is, mission-related) use and are included on new HP computers as part of KUMC's standard image:

  • Operating system: Microsoft Windows 7 on all new devices; legacy support for Windows XP
  • Office productivity (word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation): Microsoft Office Professional Enterprise (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, InfoPath).
  • Groupware (email, calendar, address book, scheduling, etc.): Microsoft Outlook
  • Web browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • Anti-virus: McAfee VirusScan
  • Anti-malware: McAfee Anti-Malware
  • Network client: Novell Client 32
  • Adobe Reader
  • Adobe Flash Player

Faculty and staff who develop resources for KUMC's web site ( http://www.kumc.edu ) should contact Web Design and Management to secure training in using the content management system; new web editing software is not being purchased.

Please note that, generally, all other PC software must be purchased through your department from the state's contract large-volume vendor (Software House International as of March 2011).

Configuration, Security

All devices connected to the KUMC network, regardless of platform, must be configured with the standard KUMC "image" and applications which include, but are not limited to:

  • McAfee anti-virus and anti-spyware
  • Automatic patching through WSUS (for Windows computers)
  • Novell Client32 software
  • LANDesk software (enabled) for remote support
