Lync is now Skype for Business

Microsoft Skype for Business (previously called "Lync") is a powerful way to instantly communicate with KUMC colleagues, KUMC students and other federated partners. With the click of a button, you can open a text chat, make a video call, or participate in an online meeting. Skype for Business makes online communication more collaborative and engaging. In addition, you can use Skype for Business from nearly any computer or mobile device, on campus or while connected to our VPN.

Microsoft has changed the name of Lync to Skype for Business and given it a new look, though the features and functionality remain the same. During July 2015, updates from Microsoft will be distributed to all campus computers to update Lync to Skype for Business. During the update from Lync to Skype for Business, you may be prompted to restart your Skype for Business client to complete the changes.

Some updates to the Skype for Business client include:

  1. File transfer preview - Use the content menu or drag and drop directly into chat area.
  2. Alert Location - Customize where alerts pop up.
  3. Missed conversations - Task bar icon will blink then highlight in yellow.
  4. Improved meeting features - Personal controls for audio/video along with meeting and layout views.

Note: You should not transmit HIPPA, FERPA, credit card information, or other sensitive information across your Skype for Business instant messaging and video sessions.

Skype for Business is available for Windows computers. Lync is available for Mac computers. Neither Skype for Business or Lync are available for Linux operating systems.
