Why are we doing it?
Over the past several years the use of GroupWise in the messaging market has been shrinking. Microsoft Outlook and Exchange have emerged as the market leader. As a result of GroupWise's declining market share, many software manufacturers have abandoned further development with GroupWise. This means that various software packages that integrate with email, calendar and other document sharing features are not compatible with GroupWise. Since Microsoft Outlook and Exchange is the industry leader, many 3rd party software applications and systems (such as SharePoint) integrate directly.
Outlook and Exchange also has far superior mobility integration than GroupWise. With the relatively quick adoption rate of mobile platforms, it is important the Medical Center be able to integrate and provide messaging and calendaring services on those devices in a timely fashion.
A future phase of this project will also enable sharing calendar information with the KU Lawrence campus for busy searches and more seamless collaboration.
