Blocked Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Applications

While there are some legitimate academic and research uses of P2P file sharing, the University recognizes that most P2P activity is for non-educational purposes. The use of P2P to download copyrighted materials without permission violates U.S. Copyright law and leaves the University and the downloader vulnerable to both civil and criminal penalties.  Additionally, its use can put tremendous strain on University network resources and the installation of P2P software can result in the computer becoming infected with spyware (often bundled with P2P software) and the possible inappropriate disclosure of sensitive information.

As a result of the risks associated with P2P activities, KUMC actively blocks the use of P2P applications on the University's network.  If you are a staff or faculty member and need access to a P2P application for University business, please contact Information Security at kumc-security@kumc.edu or (913) 588-3333.
