Admissions Process and Requirements

The first step in starting the MHSA program is submission of your application packet for review. The required documents are listed below. You may send in the elements of your packet as you collect or complete them, or you may wait and send your packet as a completed unit.

  1. KU Graduate School Application form. Applicants must submit a KU application form (domestic or international). The International form is for use by applicants who are not permanent citizens of the U.S.
  2. Application fee. Applicants must submit a non-refundable application fee of $50 (domestic applicants) or $65 (international applicants), in the form of a check made payable to the University of Kansas.
  3. Transcripts. Applicants must submit one official transcript of all previous academic work beyond the secondary level. These may be mailed directly from the registrar’s office of the applicant’s university to the MHSA office, or they may be mailed to the applicant for inclusion in the application packet. Sealed and stamped transcript envelopes must not be opened.
    • Applicants must hold, at a minimum, a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in this country or a recognized university abroad.
    • To be admitted as a regular graduate student, applicants must have not less than a B grade point average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) overall. Students are sometimes admitted on a probationary or provisional basis when their grade point average is less than 3.0.
    • For applicants still in school, a transcript showing the first three years of undergraduate work is acceptable. Before matriculation, entering students must have on file a final degree-granting transcript for each previous degree received.
  4. Resume. Applicants must submit a resume indicating education and work background, honors, memberships in professional, school, service organizations and any other personal information relevant to applying to a graduate program.
  5. Personal statement. Applicants must submit a personal statement. This is a brief essay outlining the applicant’s reasons for wanting to pursue graduate education in health administration, career objectives, and any other information that would help the Admission Committee get to know the applicant. This is an important picture of the applicant and his or her ability to write clearly and descriptively. Personal statements should be no more than two pages long, single-spaced.
  6. Letters of recommendation. Applicants must submit three (3) confidential letters of recommendation from individuals qualified to comment on their potential success both in a graduate program and as a health care executive. These letters are to be submitted on the KU Admission Recommendation Form.
    • Current students or recent graduates must submit at least one letter from a college instructor.
    • Employed applicants may ask work associates to supply references. In the latter case, at least one letter should be from a supervisor.
  7. International Applicants. Students submitting international applications have additional requirements, as follows:
    • TOEFL and IELTS Requirements.
    • All international students are now required to submit an evaluation of their academic credentials, as performed by one the many companies selling this service, such as World Education Service (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE).
    • Please be advised that there are currently no graduate assistantships available in our department and international students are not eligible for federal student loans or scholarships. International students must be financially prepared to handle the full cost of living here and attending school.
    • For additional information related to attending KUMC, please refer to the KUMC International Programs site.
  8. Interview. After all admission documentation is complete, each competitive applicant for the MHSA program will be invited for an interview.
  9. Completed applications for fall semester should be received by April 15.
    • Applications should be received in plenty of time to allow for an on-site interview, if you wish to be considered in the April 15 cut.
    • Applications received in the months preceding April will be held for review until April 15.
    • Applications received and completed after that date will be considered on a space available basis only. Students are admitted in the fall semester only.
    • It is the Department’s intent to accept only those applicants who can be admitted as regular, degree-seeking students, full- or part-time.
  10. Submit your application packet to:
Department of Health Policy and Management
5008 Student Center, Mail Stop 3044
    University of Kansas Medical Center
    3901 Rainbow Boulevard
    Kansas City, Kansas 66160
