The Department of Health Policy and Management (HP&M) was established in 1982 as the Department of Health Services Administration on KU's Lawrence campus, at the request of the University and the state legislature. In 1998, the Department was moved to the School of Medicine in Kansas City, and its name was changed.
HP&M has an interdisciplinary faculty representing a variety of academic disciplines, as well as a variety of teaching and research focuses. The Department also has a number of affiliated aculty members who collaborate with core faculty in both teaching and research.
The Department has awarded the Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA) degree to more than 400 individuals who now hold management and executive positions in health care organizations across the nation. Graduates of the MHSA program work in a variety of organizations, including hospitals, health care systems, long-term care organizations, physician group practices, and insurance and managed care firms. U.S. News and World Reports currently rank the MHSA program among the top twenty-five health administration programs in U.S. public universities.
