Genomics Core Policy

Genomics Core Policies on Attribution and Cost Recovery

Mission and Goal
The Genomics Core at KUMC serves as a resource for providing expert and timely genomics services for Next Generation sequencing and microarray analysis. The Genomics Core offers services to investigators both within and outside KUMC on a fee for service basis for sequencing, microarray and other core support services. The Genomics Core's mission is to provide and maintain an infrastructure for state of the art genomics services. The Core's primary goal is to generate raw genomic data sets, including studies of gene expression (RNA-seq and microarrays), Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) (DNA-seq and microarray), de-novo DNA sequencing, protein-DNA interaction (e.g. ChIP-seq), DNA methylation, and DNA variation, using high-throughput sequencing and microarray platforms in both human and model organisms.

Funding Models
The Genomics Core is a cost-recovery operation. We will work with the investigator to find a funding model that works best for each individual lab or center/department. Funding options include:

Model 1: Fee for Service
· The Facility offers a fixed-cost option for standard genomic services. This includes next-generation sequence, microarray interrogation   and other core support services.

Model 2: Research Support - Genomics Core Personnel on Grants
· Genomics Core staff members are incorporated on Core, Center and other grants as support personnel.
· Genomics Core's personnel % time on a grant should be representative of the actual effort required to meet the Core or Centers demand for services. (In no case should effort be less than 5%.)

Model 3: Subsidized Services
· Other KUMC entities (department, division, core or center) may subsidize Genomics Core activities. Members of these entities receive subsidized services in proportion to the contributions. For example, members of the Kansas Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center and the Developmental Biology COBRE are eligible for subsidized services.

Authorship
In cases where Genomics Core personnel contribute to the intellectual development of the project beyond that which would have been otherwise possible for the investigator's team, or authored any component of the text, authorship should be provided on the resulting manuscript or abstract.
Above all, it is important for the researcher and facility personnel working on the project to agree on criteria for authorship early in their collaboration.

Attribution
Sequencing or microarray data generated through the Genomics Core that is used in publications must cite the Kansas University Medical Center - Genomics Core and reference the core support received from the Kansas Intellectual and Developmental Disability Research Center (NIH U54 HD090216) and the Molecular Regulation of Cell Development and Differentiation - COBRE (9P20GM104936-10).

Data Handling
All Next Generation sequencing raw data sets will be held in Genomics Core storage for the duration of 60 days after notification to the investigator of its availability for download. Thereafter, data will be subject to deletion. It is the responsibility of the investigator to ensure that a copy of data is preserved for the future analysis. All microarray data is maintained on MDMS (http://bioinformatics5.kumc.edu/mdms). However, it is recommended that investigators maintain copies of the data.

Terms and Conditions
Payment. Client agrees to pay for any services in accordance with the agreement. The Genomics Core requires payment arrangements be made before any services are performed, and for payment to be completed upon the release of results. Unless otherwise specified by the Genomics Core, all payments are due and payable within thirty (30) days of the date of the invoice. Payment shall be deemed late if not received within such time and shall be subject to interest equal to 2% per month, together with all costs and expenses (including without limitation reasonable attorneys' fees and disbursements and court costs) incurred by the Genomics Core in collecting such overdue amounts.

Warranty. The KUMC Genomics Core agrees to conduct the requested services and perform the services agreed upon in accordance with the highest scientific and professional standards. All parties recognize and understand that the Genomics Core provides services to explore a biological question or scientific hypothesis. The Genomics Core makes absolutely no warranties, express or implied, and disclaims all warranties including, but not limited to, implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. The client's exclusive remedy is, at the KUMC Genomics Core's sole option, a credit for, or re-performance of, the services in question. In no event will the KUMC Genomics Core be liable for any consequential, incidental, special or indirect damages, including without limitation, damages for loss of profits, business interruption, loss of business information or property damage sustained by client from the use of, or inability to use, any results, even if the KUMC Genomics Core has been advised of the possibility of such damages.

Confidentiality. Both parties each agree to maintain in confidence and not disclose to third parties any confidential information that is disclosed to one by the other party. This includes pricing information and all communications.

Data Handling and Intellectual Property. Following settlement of all invoices, all compilations of scientific and technical data produced or prepared by the KUMC Genomics Core in the performance of services requested shall be the exclusive property of the client and shall be deemed to be works made for hire. Any work resulting from unpaid services and all associated intellectual property shall remain the exclusive property of the KUMC Genomics Core. By using the KUMC Genomics Core, unless otherwise specified and agreed upon by both parties, the client gives permission to the KUMC Genomics Core to utilize his/her data for internal development of core services, after services are complete and deliverables are met. These provisions shall survive any termination or expiration of this Agreement.
