Participants in this project explore clinical applications of new genetic biotechnology, and the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of the Human Genome Project. Teachers network with peers and genetic professionals, and dissemninate genetics information to students, colleagues and the public.

Supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Human Genome Research Program / Ethical, Legal and Social Implications.

Participation involves four phases over two school years:

Phase I - First Workshop (summer)
Phase II - Classroom Use of Materials (school year)
Phase III - Second Workshop (summer)
Phase IV - Dissemination and Networking (school year)

This project updates participants on applications of the Human Genome Project, focusing on the ethical, legal, and social implications of the new biotechnology through didactic interactions with experts and families affected by genetic conditions. Additional topics include: genetic screening, genetic testing, public policy issues, careers, genetic resources, classroom curriculum materials, and collaborations with genetic professionals through computer networks.
