Many teachers want to expose their students to the ethical dilemmas involved with the new genetic technologies; however, teachers have little training in ethics. Here is very condensed information about ethics and its use in schools.
- Student Objective(s):
To be introduced to ethical decision making; to understand the difference between the processes used to discuss the dilemma vs. the decision.
- Description of Activities:
Provided on the handout is an overview of ethics and the decision making process. An emphasis is on the difference between ethics and morals and which part of ethical decision making is best done in schools. In many classrooms, discussions of an ethical nature end in students debating, voting or saying everyone can think whatever they want which violates the premise that in ethics we are searching for the better answer.
