The Hope of Science: DNA Practical Applications Time Line

- Materials Needed: poster board, tape, index cards, glue, pre-made letters, pre-made numbers, black marker, colored pencils, library resources
- Class Time: independent project spanning one quarter plus out of class research
- Brief Summary: Students will design a time line to inform and educate people about the history of DNA practical applications.
- Student Objective(s): To inform others of facts about DNA-related discoveries and to create, display and explain information to classmates.
- Description of Activities: Students research and construct a time line that starts from the middle of the 19th century and projects to the year 2010. Appropriate pictures will be drawn on the time line to help accentuate historical facts that include scientific discoveries, industrial applications, and current events that relate to the Human Genome Project.
- Integration (tying it all together): Math, shows chronological order, charts data; English, writing skills; Communication, explaining facts to others; Research, finding information; Social Science, relationship of time and historical scientific facts to the present.
