For participants at the NSGC Workshop, Emerging Technologies, at the NSGC meeting October 12, 2007.

Interactive workshop of new & cool clinical and educational technology applications for genetic counselors:

Participants should bring a wireless computer to use and share during the session.

Prior to arriving at the workshop, each participant should download the following software (allow up to 30 minutes to install). You will get the most out of the workshop if you have practiced using some of it [whiteboard, skype, other programs]). You should provide a working e-mail address at least 3 weeks PRIOR to the workshop, so you can be sent information, files, and URL links prior to, and during the workshop for some of the demonstrations.

Skype.com - download the software, choose and remember your user name and password. You will also need some sort of audio/visual equipment, minimally a microphone, for maximum benefit of the workshop, and a small video camera (webcam). You may wish to order an inexpensive microphone and head set from Skype.

GoogleDoc - if you have provided e-mail, you will be sent an invitation to post your comments on this collaborative document (you may need a gmail e-mail account)

Elluminate Live - you will be sent the URL to use approximately 24 hours before the session. You should download the necessary software, and MOST importantly, PRACTICE using your microphone with it PRIOR to the workshop.

Virtual worlds - you will need to download the software (free) AND create a virtual persona (avatar) of yourself to participate in Second Life activities, and visit genetics related islands. Requirements for using Second Life

Instructions:

  1. Install Second Life Software (free, and create a virtual persona, an avatar of yourself), http://slurl.com/secondlife/
  2. Visit Pietro's Place in Second Life (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Yora/3/114/25) prior to the workshop with your avatar. There's fun stuff to do on his beach and free items to copy as well
