What is involved in a Genetic Counseling evaluation?

  • Establishing or confirming a diagnosis, sometimes including additional testing to determine the specific type of the condition
    • Information is collected - family and medical history, sometimes including photographs of family members
    • Consultation with other specialists or additional tests, as needed
    • Medical diagnosis, evaluation, management DNA testing, chromosome testing, or other genetic testing, as needed
  • Determining the recurrence risk for each family member
  • Communicating information and choices to help individuals make fully informed decisions regarding risks.
    • Explanation of disorder, inheritance pattern, risk of recurrence
    • Discussion of options available to deal with the condition Follow-up care and treatment planned
