Course included (see 1997 agenda):
- didactic interactions with genetic and ELSI experts
- panels of families with genetic conditions
- new curricular resources / lesson plan demonstrations
- laboratory tours, including world wide web and internet labs
- role play sessions and hands-on activities
Participants networked with peers and genetic professionals,
and disseminate genetics information to students, colleagues and the public.
This course updated participants on applications of the
Human Genome Project, focusing on the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of
the new genetic biotechnology. Additional topics included: genetic screening, genetic
testing, public policy issues, careers, genetic resources, classroom curriculum materials,
and collaborations with genetic professionals.
Course Requirements:
REGISTRATION and INFORMATION:
Fee: $150.00 deposit due with registration (payable to KUIMF)
Optional Graduate Credit: Two hours of graduate
credit through the University of Kansas. Involved lesson plan development
activities, dissemination of information to students, colleagues and the general public.
Graduate tuition and materials: $300.00 (only required if enrolled in
course for graduate credit) - was due May 15, 1998.
