Family History and Genetics
A medical family history includes information on your relatives health and medical conditions. This information, as well as their relationship to you can give geneticists information about conditions which would be important for your health, as well as that of other family members. The medical family history can be reviewed by your health care provider, and may also include a referral to a medical health provider who specializes in hereditary conditions, such as a medical geneticist or genetic counselor.
What is Genetic Counseling?
Genetic Counseling is a process by which individuals and families can explore their genetic history, understand their risk for genetic disease and deal with the consequences of that risk. Genetic Counselors are individuals who assist families through this process with specific skills in genetic risk assessment, knowledge of inherited disease, testing and treatment options and insight into the impact of genetic disease on families.
Genetic Counselors work in a variety of clinical settings including cancer, pediatric, adult, prenatal, neurology, cardiac, and/or research.
