Mission Statement

The mission of the Equal Opportunity Office is to establish meaningful partnerships with faculty, staff and administrators to ensure non-discrimination for students, residents, employees and the public.

The Equal Opportunity Office carries out its mission in several ways, including:

  • serving as a resource to the Executive Vice Chancellor and other university administrators
  • developing and implementing programs to educate the campus community about equal opportunity principles, rights and responsibilities
  • developing an infrastructure that ensures compliance with KUMC's obligations as an affirmative action/equal opportunity institution including:
    • policies which articulate the institution's commitment to equal opportunity in employment and education for all persons, regardless of their protected class
    • policies which underscore the institution's commitment to maintaining working and learning environments which are free from discrimination or harassment on the basis of a protected class
    • policies which clearly identify the individuals who are responsible for ensuring equal opportunity
    • an active affirmative action program which includes annual written plans for women and minorities and for individuals with disabilities and covered veterans that identifies problem areas, establishes programs to address those problem areas, and evaluates the success of affirmative action efforts
  • monitoring employment and academic practices
  • developing and implementing programs and practices to ensure that individuals with disabilities (including employees, residents and students) are provided with equal opportunity, access to institutional programs and reasonable accommodation
  • responding at the earliest and most informal level to situations which may involve discrimination
  • investigating discrimination complaints filed internally
