Light Bulb Disposal Instructions

Light Bulbs

Disposal of Unbroken Fluorescent Bulbs:

These types of bulbs, if unbroken, should be collected by Facilities Management.

Disposal of Unbroken Incandescent Bulbs:

These types of bulbs may be disposed of in general trash, to be collected by Housekeeping.

Disposal of Broken Fluorescent Bulbs:

Fluorescent bulbs do contain a small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing which can be released after a breakage.  For this reason, EHS should be contacted to clean up and collect any debris from a broken fluorescent bulb.  Simply fill out the Chemical Pick-Up Request form.  This form will ask who you are and what room and building the broken bulbs are in.  If you have any special instructions like where the bulbs are located within the room, or if you have special instructions on when the pick-up should occur, you can enter this information in the comments section.   The form will be submitted electronically to several members of EHS and someone will come and pick up the broken bulbs as soon as possible.

Disposal of Broken Incandescent Bulbs:

Broken incandescent bulbs may be placed in the broken glass container for eventual collection by Housekeeping.  If you are uncertain whether your broken bulb is incandescent or fluorescent, please err on the side of caution and contact the EHS office for advice.
