How Campus will be Notified of Closings

NOTE: The University of Kansas Medical Center launched an intranet on June 20, 2016 to provide easier access to information and tools used by our faculty and staff. Valid KU Medical Center network credentials are required to access the intranet.

Many of the forms and procedures for Emergency Management have been relocated to the intranet. If you are affiliated with another institution and are interested in collaborating or learning more about our procedures, please contact University Emergency Management at

In the event of a major winter storm or other inclement weather, this is a reminder of how KUMC would communicate with faculty, staff and students should a declaration of inclement weather result in a delay of operations and/or cancellation of classes. KUMC will remain open for business and will hold classes as scheduled unless particularly hazardous weather conditions threaten the area. If conditions significantly deteriorate throughout the day and/or overnight, we will issue a declaration of "inclement weather."

Providing notification to the Kansas City campus community:

If a declaration of "inclement weather" is made, the university will make every effort to inform the campus community as soon as possible. When inclement weather occurs overnight, by 5:45 a.m. we will:

  • Have a recorded announcement available on 913-588-INFO (913-588-4636), KUMC's faculty/staff/student information line. Please note, if there is not a declaration of inclement weather, there will not be an updated recording, even if weather conditions are less than ideal.
  • Send out a RAVE email(s) to students, faculty, and employees.
  • Potentially send a "Critical Information" e-mail in conjunction with RAVE messages regarding the inclement weather.
  • Place inclement weather information on the KUMC Website
  • Text messages to mobile phones for students and employees who have opted in to the RAVE text messaging alert system. Opt in right now by clicking here to update your Emergency Contact Info!

Finally, we will use local media outlets WDAF (Fox4) KMBC-TV 9, and/or KCTV-5 only if inclement weather results in our delaying or canceling classes or closing the campus.

Should a declaration of inclement weather be made during the day, the campus community will be notified via critical information e-mail and/or telephone contacts and web updates.

Maintaining Essential Programs and Services:

Vice Chancellors, Deans, Directors and Chairpersons must determine minimum staffing requirements to ensure the maintenance of essential programs and activities. Any non-exempt employees whose services have been identified by their department heads as essential are expected to report to work in accordance with the supervisor's instructions. These persons shall be eligible for overtime or compensatory time related to work performed pursuant to a declaration of inclement weather. Some examples of essential services include maintenance of building operations, clearing of walkways, streets and parking lots, student residence hall services, and public safety.
