Residency Directors

lisbon  Norvell

The pioneering effort that began two years ago by myself and Dr. Norvell has led to this point in time; the recruitment of our third class of residents!! These are exciting times for residency training at the University of Kansas. Over the past few years, the University of Kansas Hospital has received many awards and accolades for our quality of care. The University Health System Consortium recently ranked the University of Kansas Hospital second in terms of quality and safety among the nation’s top (101) academic medical centers. KU was recently recognized as the best hospital in the Kansas City metropolitan area, and six of our medical specialties (Cancer, Cardiology, GI, ENT,  Nephrology, and Pulmonology) are ranked in the top 50 in the country by US News and World Report. Our risk-adjusted mortality index for the year ranks us in the top seven percent of academic hospitals. In addition, our emergency department recently won two national awards for quality of care. Both of these awards recognize superior risk adjusted mortality and superior outcomes.

So what does this mean to you as a residency applicant in Emergency Medicine? If you choose the University of Kansas for your Emergency Medicine training, you will learn to provide the highest quality of care available. As a result of our outstanding reputation, our hospital attracts the most challenging patients in all specialties. The University of Kansas Hospital is currently adding three additional floors to the Center for Advanced Heart Care to accommodate the increase in patient volume. This increased volume and complexity guarantees an excellent clinical experience, both in our emergency department and on off-service rotations. The University of Kansas is a level I trauma center, primary stroke center, heart center, burn center, and cancer center. Upon completion of residency at KU, physicians will be comfortable with the care of the sickest septic, cardiac and trauma patients and will be well-equipped for the practice of Emergency Medicine anywhere. The applicants to our residency program have outstanding credentials, and if you choose University of Kansas you will train alongside peers who will enhance and enrich your learning process.

Our emergency medicine residents and department are involved in and leading the TeamSTEPPS curriculum, this initiative aims to improve teamwork, patient safety, and throughput. Other quality and throughput initiatives are also underway. Experience in these initiatives will enable our residents to be leaders in academic and community hospitals alike.

Residency didactic training is completed in our newly constructed resident conference room complete with Smart Board. Some of the highlights of our didactic training include high fidelity medical simulation, regularly scheduled cadaver lab, emergency ultrasound training, mock oral board training, and journal club. We have also continued to recruit and develop highly energized, motivated and dedicated faculty physicians. We feel that we have developed an excellent plan for Emergency Medicine residency training and are looking forward to an outstanding third class of residents in July 2012.Emergency Center sign
