Associated Youth Services

Associated Youth Services exists to help at-risk youth and their families become productive and effective members of their communities.  Consistent interns are needed to help with Kansas City in school tutoring programs to help 12 - 19 year olds, who have been suspended for behavioral issues or are at risk, earn academic and vocational credits. These interns will work with a teacher and behavioral specialist. Other volunteer opportunities include assisting the part time school nurse with giving medications, performing physicals and screenings, and teaching the youth about health related issues.  School hours are from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Classroom Tutors & Mentors

Cross-Lines’ mission it to help vulnerable persons avoid slipping into poverty, to alleviate the suffering of persons caught in poverty, to assist persons who, with help, would be able to lift themselves out of poverty, and to teach affluent people about the root causes of poverty, its debilitating impact and what they, as responsible and caring persons, can do in the struggle to overcome poverty.  There are many opportunities to volunteer at Cross-lines!  Interns are needed for home repair projects, youth group project leaders, community service projects, thrift store cashier (half day shifts: one time a week or 2 times a month-contact Shari Jackson), Youth after school program starting in the fall (contact Shelly Hartman), food pantry helpers, newsletter shipping every five weeks, and CHAPTERS outreach programs for neighborhood youth.

We deliver on that promise by providing comprehensive, continuous programs and services for families and individuals of all ages, races and religions. The Migrant Education Program needs interns to tutor kindergarteners through high school students from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  There are also opportunities to help adults with GED, ESL, and SSL classes.

Interns are also needed to help with the Students as Teachers program.  This tutoring program helps kindergartners through 8th graders.  Volunteer activities include helping the students with homework, tutoring all subjects especially math and reading, computer orientations, and recreation times offsite.  Interns are needed to volunteer at least one evening a week with one to two students.  Tutoring hours at El Centro are 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays.  There are also tutoring hours from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursdays at selected school sites.

Friendship Inn

Reach Out and Read (ROR) Kansas City (previously known as KC Reads) is an early literacy program that partners with pediatric clinics around the city. Currently there are 33 ROR sites. Our main volunteer need is for readers within these clinics with the goal of introducing books to the children that come to see the doctor and model for the parents what it looks like to read out loud to children. We do have other practical needs like labeling and sorting the books that distribute at these clinics. Each year we distribute about 50,000 new books.

Douglas County Emergency Management is responsible for emergency and disaster planning, preparedness, and response in Douglas County, Kansas. Douglas County Emergency Management currently is analyzing flux capability in the area of public health resulting from sudden demands caused by emergencies or disasters. The position of an organization to manage a rapidly increasing challenge is called surge capacity. The intern, under the direction of Paula Phillips, Director of Douglas County Emergency Management, would research the surge capacity planning for public health emergencies of other communities similar to Lawrence. This experience involves a combination of work in Lawrence, which would be minimal, and home-office based research. The skills required by this project include telephone interviews of key personnel—who would be identified by Ms. Phillips—in other communities, Internet‑based research, compiling information into a database, and writing. Kaw Valley Center
