Respiratory Protection

The Unversity's Respiratory Protection Program has been established to provide proper protection against inhalation hazards that may be present in your workplace. This respiratory protection plan provides written procedures for the selection, use, and storage of respirators. It also gives an overview of training and Medical Surveillance requirements. This respiratory protection plan meets the requirements set forth by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134

Whenever feasible, engineering controls and administrative work practice controls will be employed to maintain worker exposures below exposure limits and at a safe level. Respiratory protection shall only be required if these controls are not feasible or are not able to adequately reduce exposures to airborne contaminants.

Potential hazards include:

  • Asbestos
  • Animal Wastes
  • Chemical Inhalation
  • Biological Agents

Fit Testing and Training

Fit testing  and training is required on an annual basis for any tight fitting respirator such as N-95, half-face and full-face respirators when hazards are present. You must be enrolled in the Respiratory Protection Program and have been medically evaluated to wear a respirator before you can be fit tested.
