Executive Order 11246 prohibits federal contractors from disparately treating individuals in the terms and conditions of their employment based on several protected categories, including sexual orientation.
Sexual orientation is the preferred term used to describe a pattern of emotional, romantic and sexual attraction to men, women, or both (or neither).
Heterosexual is a person who is emotionally, physically, and/or sexually attracted or committed to a member or members of the opposite sex.
Homosexual is a person who is primarily emotionally, physically, and/or sexually attracted or committed to a member or members of the same sex. Gay is a commonly accepted word for homosexuals and Lesbian is a commonly accepted word for female homosexuals.
Bisexual is a person who is emotionally, physically, and/or sexually attracted or committed to both men and women.
Sexual orientation discrimination involves adverse treatment of a person (an applicant, employee, or student) because of that person's sexual orientation (gay, lesbian, bisexual); because that person is perceived to be gay, lesbian or bisexual; or because that person is associated with persons who are gay, lesbian or bisexual.
If you believe you have been subjected to sexual orientation discrimination or have witnessed sexual orientation discrimination, please contact the EOO office at (913) 588-8011, or click here to file a complalint online.
