AHEC Exhibits at Wallace County Health Fair Karen Aufdemberge and Lisa Stouffer, program coordinators of the University of Kansas Medical Center Northwest Area Health Education Center (AHEC) exhibited at the 12th Annual Wallace County Health Fair, Jan. 24, 2009, in Sharon Springs, Kan. More than 300 people attended the health fair.

The AHEC display board featured hometown heroes Sarah Linton, RD, LD, CDE, director of Diabetes Education and Nutrition Services at Goodland Regional Medical Center (GRMC); Travis Daise, MD, Family Physician, GRMC; and Robert Moser, MD, medical chief of staff, Greeley County Health Services.

The Northwest AHEC staff focused on encouraging individuals to pursue careers in the health care profession. Flyers were distributed, giving options to explore different careers. A laptop with Jeopardy and Jeopardy Jr. was set up, which allowed people of all ages to challenge themselves on their knowledge of the health care careers available.

“Karen and I received many positive comments from those attending the fair, said Stouffer. “They really liked the idea that we focused our theme on “Home Town Heroes.” The community seemed appreciative that KUMC had a presence and provided resources and information for choices in a health care field.”

Health fairs are beneficial, because it allows community members to come out and see what is available to them in their area. Also, free screenings are given and blood draws are taken as well. The exposure to the health care field assists various health care facilities in getting their word out and connecting with their community.
