Program: Kansas Reads to Preschoolers
When the preschool children at Medicine Lodge Grade School or Stafford Elementary School have needed health care assistance from the University of Kansas Medical Center pediatricians in the past, the 280 miles in between the schools and the medical center has not been a problem. The KU Center for Telemedicine and Telehealth (KUCTT) has been making such connections throughout Kansas for nearly 20 years.
So, when the Kansas Center for the Book at the State Library of Kansas announced it was promoting the importance of reading to Kansas preschoolers and other youth this month, the pediatric staff at KU Medical Center thought "Why not read to the kids at Medicine Lodge and Stafford? They're only 280 miles away." So they are.
The State Library of Kansas has asked for program suggestions and related ideas that could bring attention to this annual event, and the KU Medical Center staff thought that sitting down and reading a book to preschoolers nearly half-way across Kansas might get someone's attention.
The sponsored book, Wiggle, written by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Scott Menchin, was the featured book during the 2009 event. For more information about Kansas Reads to Preschoolers, go to www.kcfb.info, or contact Gretchen Patch, firstname.lastname@example.org.
