Centers of Interdisciplinary Concentration
Recognized interdisciplinary "Centers" at KU Medical Center operate outside, but in cooperation with, the academic departments of KU Medical Center. See the University of Kansas Medical Center Directory for names of directors.

Various departments at KU Medical Center have centers designated within them, e.g., the infectious disease center within the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, as well as sections, divisions, services, etc. When referring to one of these centers, identify the department within which it operates. See Department section.

Chair
Accepted title for the presiding officer of a department or committee.

Chancellor
The chief executive officer of the University of Kansas. Capitalize only when it precedes the name. Do not repeat with the name on second reference.

Commas
Here are guidelines for some of the most frequent uses of commas in KUMC publications:

In a series:
Use commas to separate elements in a series, but do not put a comma before the conjunction in a simple series:
We train physicians, nurses and allied health professionals.

Put a comma before the concluding conjunction in a series if an integral element of the series requires a conjunction:
School of Public Health programs include preventive medicine, biostatistics, and health policy and management.

After credentials:
John Smith, MD, conducted an outreach clinic in Garden City.

With hometowns and states:
Students distributing coats and scarves included Jane Doe, Emporia, and John Smith, Leavenworth.

In Concordia, Kan., there are three family practice physicians.

With full dates:
The members of the accreditation committee visited on July 15, 2010, and were impressed.

With quotations:
Commas always go inside quotation marks.

Commencement
Uppercase when referring to KUMC's annual ceremony. Describe graduates using the semester (not month) in which they graduated.
