When it comes to having the right attitude, no one does it better than William Holmes, who has received the first quarter Employee of the Quarter award as part of KUMC's C.A.R.E. employee recognition program. William is the kind of guy who gets satisfaction from doing his job and doing it well. When he found out he was nominated and selected to be the first quarter Employee of the Quarter, he was a little overwhelmed.
"I just come to work every day and try to do the best job I can for the students and university," explained William. "I don't expect recognition for it. But I am touched and honored to be selected for this award. I've been part of group recognitions before, but I'll admit that being singled out feels nice."
William is being honored because he has been coming to work for the past 29 years equipped with an attitude to do his best. Whether he's installing new carpet or tile, repairing a roof, or plowing snow, he does the work with the same quality he would want done in his home. If a job meets his walk-through inspection, then he and the crew can leave. If it doesn't, they fix things until everything is right. William's priority is to take care of his customers so they can get back into their offices and work spaces and resume their jobs as quickly as possible.
William's efforts directly affect the functionality and appearance of the university. His work can be physically taxing and require working in Mother Nature's extremes. But none of this stops him from loving what he does and doing his job with a warm smile and friendly manner. This attitude and attention to quality has not gone unnoticed.
"William's can-do attitude and drive for customer satisfaction means he completes a project on target," wrote William's nominator. "He strives to be the best in everything he does. He is truly the example of professionalism and is dedicated to the mission. William is a tremendous asset to the university, and we need more employees like him."
Outside of work, William enjoys living healthy. He runs in numerous community runs, like the Groundhog Run, Trolley Run, and Warrior Dash, and likes to ride his four-wheeler. He also spends as much time as he can with his 28-year-old son, Danny. When asked what he wants five years from now, William said he would like to have a grandchild soon.
Fun facts you didn't know about William: Woody Harrelson would be the actor to play William in a movie, and he likes to watch Hallmark movies.
"These movies always make you feel good," he said.
Employees nominated for this award had to be employed for at least one year and were measured by the following criteria: passion for their job; evidence of excellence (going above and beyond); being a team player; and making an impact. Nominate someone for the second quarter Employee of the Quarter award by June 30.
