Energy conservation awareness

April 22 awareness message: The amount of water used by KU Medical Center in a year would fill up 157 olympic-size swimming pools.

April 15 awareness message: The amount of natural gas used by KU Medical Center would heat 4,000 plus average U.S. households for a year.

April 8 awareness message: The amount of electricity used by KU Medical Center would power 5,000 plus average U.S. households for a year.

We have declared April as our Energy Conservation Awareness month. In each KUMed Central issue in April, we will share an awareness message to help you understand how much we're spending on utilities. In the April 29 issue, you can take a quiz over the information we've provided. Everyone who answers correctly will be entered into a drawing for compact fluorescent bulbs, so watch for the quiz at the end of the month.

With your help, we can reduce campus-wide energy consumption by 5 to 10 percent, support our efforts to be conscientious planetary citizens, and avoid up to $350,000 to $700,000 in utilities costs. Remember that simple actions like turning off your office lights and computer monitor every time you leave can add up to big savings.
