Beware of phishing emails

Our campus email is once again being targeted by scammers attempting to steal passwords and personal information. During the past week, you may have received several scam emails appearing to come from celebrities regarding weight loss schemes or messages prompting you to upgrade your mailbox quota size. All of these are scam emails.

Please do NOT click on the links contained in these emails as they are malicious and will attempt to infect your computer with a virus. The best action is to delete the email.

TIP for recognizing scam emails: Outlook provides you with an easy way to identify scam emails. If you hover your mouse over a link, you'll see a popup that shows you the URL and you can tell where a link will take you before you click on it. Finally, as a reminder:

  • You should never click on links or open attachments sent to you from an unknown person.
  • Information Resources will NEVER ask you for your password.
  • Information Resources will never send you an email asking you to click on a link or to provide information to increase your mailbox size.

If you have any questions regarding an email that seems suspicious, please forward the email to Information Security at kumc-security@kumc.edu or call the information security hotline at (913) 588-3333.
