Foundations of Interprofessional Collaboration Overview
Foundations of Interprofessional Collaboration: Introduction to TeamSTEPPS® is a required program for all professional programs on the KUMC campus. This program brings health professions students together to learn about, from and with each other to prepare future practitioner for collaborative practice. TeamSTEPPS® emphasizes basic principles as well as exposes students to other important concepts so they will be ready to practice within an interprofessional team. The program has 3 Levels which increase in clinical and communication complexity throughout each of the levels.

A half-day event that brings together 800 health care professional students to learn about, from and with each other. Through interprofessional activities, students explore the roles and responsibilities of health professions with the goal to develop an appreciation of what each profession brings to the health care team to facilitate working in teams. In addition students have the opportunity to practice TeamSTEPPS® communication tools in a team activity.
IPEC competencies: Values and Ethics; Roles and Responsibilities and Interprofessional Communication
The intended learner outcomes:
1) Demonstrate a work ethic with individuals of other professions to maintain a climate of mutual respect and shared values
2) Define the role of health professions (including your own) within the healthcare system
3) Acquire basic TeamSTEPPS® communication tools to effectively use with healthcare teams.
A half-day event that brings 800 students together to learn about, with and from each other. This program builds on the basic principles of TeamSTEPPS® that the students were introduced in Level 1 with the goal of students applying these principles through application of a Transition of Care planning case study. In addition, students will practice using selected TeamSTEPPS® communication tools in a low-fidelity simulation.
IPEC Competencies: Roles and Responsibilities; Interprofessional Communication and Teamwork.
The intended learner outcomes include:
1) Engage diverse healthcare professionals who complement one's own professional expertise, as well as associated resources, to develop strategies to meet specific patient care needs
2) Choose effective communication tools and techniques, including information systems and communication technologies, to facilitate discussions and interactions that enhance team function
3) Engage other health professionals appropriate to the specific care situation-in shared patient centered problem solving.
Provides students with the opportunity to further develop their interprofessional skills of communication and teamwork through a clinical case-based interprofessional simulation scenario in high-stakes/risk environment.

Intended learner outcomes include:
1) Demonstrate effective teamwork and utilize each professions unique and complementary abilities to optimize patient care
2) Express one's knowledge and opinions to team members involved in patient care with confidence, clarity, and respect, working to ensure common understanding of information and treatment and care decisions
3) Demonstrate working effectively with other health professionals appropriate to the specific care situation in shared patient centered problem solving.
