What Is the CARE Clinic?

CARE stands for Childhood Autism Referral and Evaluation. This clinic provides a comprehensive evaluation for children and adolescents who are suspected of having an autism spectrum disorder. When socialization, language and play are not developing appropriately, a comprehensive evaluation is needed to determine the possibility of an autism spectrum disorder, as well as to assess developmental levels. Information can be very important for early intervention and school and home programming.  Assessments, recommendations and referrals are made in the following areas:

  • Communication
  • Social/Emotional development
  • Problem behaviors
  • Sensory and motor skills
  • Play skills

Interdisciplinary Team Members Might Include:

  • Developmental Pediatrician
  • Psychologist
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Parent Educator
  • Physical Therapist
  • Speech and Language Pathologist

When Is the Clinic Held, and What Happens on Clinic Day?

The clinics are held on various days depending upon the age of the child and expect to be in clinic all morning.

  • Please check in 15-20 minutes prior to the appointment time in Room 1008.  Be sure to bring the child’s insurance or medical card and any other requested materials.
  • Participation in the evaluation process by the parents and/or someone who is familiar with the child is very important and will assist in final assessment and recommendations.
  • Some team members will see the child at the same time. Other team members will interview the parents or primary care providers.
  • A handwritten summary of the test results and recommendations will be given during the discussion following the evaluation.
  • A follow up appointment will be discussed and can be scheduled before you leave.
  • Copies of the typed reports will be sent to parents/guardians, the child’s primary care doctor and the referring physician or psychologist.

To Prepare for Clinic Day:

  • Bring someone with you to care for your other children or just to support you.
  • Invite the team that is involved with your child’s care or education to the evaluation.
  • You may bring snacks and/or a favorite toy for your child.
  • Prepare your child in advance by indicating that she/he will come to play with a variety of toys at the evaluation and will meet new people, but you will be there as well.
