Miscarriage is the most common complication of pregnancy. While this is a private matter for most, it is quite common as 15% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. Recurrent pregnancy loss, defined as the miscarriage of 2 or more consecutive clinical pregnancies, impacts up to 5% of all couples. We are here to help you achieve a healthy pregnancy and realize the emotional toll that this diagnosis takes on a couple.
After a complete evaluation, causes may include the following: genetic, anatomic, immune, blood clotting, hormonal or infectious.
As you can see there are many causes of RPL and treatment must be tailored to your specific causes. Even if no known cause is found, there are treatments available to increase your chance of successful pregnancy.
Our philosophy to recurrent miscarriage involves treating the entire patient. We use an evidence based approach to medical treatment after testing is completed to improve your prognosis. Medical treatment is prescribed in a supportive environment. In fact, supportive emotional care has been shown to dramatically increase your probability of live birth. Our experienced physicians, embryologists, laboratory personnel and nurses are ready to help you overcome RPL and achieve your dreams of having a child. We understand that this is an overwhelming process and for this reason have mind-body therapy available. Nurse Judy Gay, the director of our mind-body program, has experience both with infertility and RPL to help alleviate your anxiety. This, along with frequent monitoring in early pregnancy will help you realize your dream of delivering a healthy baby.
Have you every wondered…Why does this happen?…Does anyone know how I feel?
When you feel lost and do not know where to turn, we are here. We are here to help you find answers for a complicated diagnosis and to help you find your way on your journey to grow your family. Our mind-body program will help you decrease your stress and calm your mind. Through tools such as meditation, developing coping skills, and counseling, we are here to support and guide you.
Treatment and evaluation of miscarriages can be an overwhelming process emotionally and physically. Each couple has unique causes for recurrent losses and therefore the approach to care must be individualized. The staff at the KU Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine's RPL program are here to offer a team of experts to help support you through this complex process. For those facing recurrent miscarriage, having the emotional strength to pursue another pregnancy can be very difficult. However, depending upon your cause of RPL and history of miscarriage, the probability of your next pregnancy resulting in a live birth may be as high as 90%.
We recognize that many patients may travel a significant distance to our center. After your initial visit most testing and monitoring can be performed at outside laboratories or radiology centers thus minimizing travel.
Our TLC program is conveniently located at the Corporate Medical Plaza (I-435 and Nall Ave.) in Overland Park KS. To contact us for an appointment or more information, please call (913) 588-BABY (2229).
