Ovulation Induction (OI) with Clomid, Serophene (Clomiphene Citrate)

Clomid/Serophene is an oral medication used to stimulate ovulation in non-ovulating women. It is also used to enhance the quality of ovulation, to correct luteal phase defects, and to ensure the proper timing of artificial inseminations. Clomid acts as an anti-estrogen, and as a consequence, it causes the pituitary gland to produce the hormone (FSH) that stimulates the ovaries.

Clomid (Clomiphene Citrate) treatment increases the rate of twin pregnancy by approximately 10%. Less than 1% of deliveries are triplets or more. Your physician will determine the dose of Clomid. The does may start at 50 mg (1 tablet) and increase up to 150 mg(3 tablets at once) per day. The medication is usually prescribed days 3-7 of your menstrual cycle. Response to Clomid is often monitored by pelvic ultrasound. Clomid needs to be taken at the same time of day every day. Ovulation occurs approximately 5 to 8 days after you take your last tablet. Ovulation may also be triggered by an injection of HCG. If you physician prescribes HCG, additional information will be provided.
