For several years, we have had community members asking us to help them lose weight, particularly to help with the prevention of diabetes and heart disease. In response, we began development of the Native American Weight Loss Movement in 2012. This 16-week program is based on the Diabetes Prevention Program, but has been modified significantly with community input to make it more appropriate for American Indians. We have run 8 groups, each one slightly different than the last based on input from prior participants. We are now looking at how participants did in the program, what they thought of it, and ways we can continue to modify it. We are hoping to be able to obtain funding for the fully tailored program.
