Health literacy has become a "hot topic" in public health research. We define it as the ability to navigate and use the health care system and health information. This is another area in which there is very little information specific to American Indians. By learning about health literacy levels, we can create more appropriate interventions and educational programs and materials.
To help us begin to address health literacy and understand it more, we completed a survey of 500 community members using the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults, the gold standard survey for measuring health literacy. We are currently analyzing our data.
