Pilot Funding Opportunities

The Center for American Indian Community Health (CAICH) is pleased to provide pilot funding opportunities for Center members.  We provide two different types of pilot funding, including mini grants for independent investigators and matching funds for various KUMC internal grant opportunities.

Mini GrantsGrant work

CAICH has funding available for $5000 mini grants to independent investigators who are Center members for pilot projects that have the potential to lead to external funding that will benefit American Indian communities.  Mini grants are reviewed on a rolling basis by the CAICH Executive Committee; decisions are typically made within one month of submission.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a CAICH member (associate or full).
  • Must hold the rank of Assistant Professor or higher at KUMC or a partner college or university (modified titles are acceptable).
  • Preference will be given to junior faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor and to any individual who has never held external funding for a project focused on American Indians.

Guidelines:

  • Applications are reviewed by the CAICH Executive Committee, made up of Core Directors and Assistant Directors, as they are submitted.  Decisions will typically be made within one month.
  • You will be asked to provide information about the investigators involved in the project, specific aims, significance (including how the pilot will be used to prepare for an external grant submission), research strategy, and budget.
  • Budget may not be used to fund key personnel salary.
  • Applicants may request CAICH assistance with recruitment and data collection from the community outside of their budget.
  • Interested investigators should submit our on-line application, located here.

Matching Funds

CAICH is able to provide matching funds and personnel time for internal KUMC grant opportunities for projects that have the potential to lead to external funding that will benefit American Indian communities.  Applications for matching funds are reviewed on a rolling basis by the CAICH Executive Committee; decisions are typically made within one month of submission.

  • Applications should be submitted a minimum of 6 weeks prior to the internal deadline to allow for the decision to be made and budget meetings to occur prior to internal submission.
  • You will be asked to provide information about the investigators involved in the project, specific aims, significance (including how the pilot will be used to prepare for an external grant submission), research strategy, and what matching funds are being requested.
  • CAICH funds may not be used to fund key personnel salary.
  • Allowable expenses for matching funds include staff member salary support, participant incentives, travel, supplies, and other research expenses.
  • Applicants may request CAICH personnel time as matching funds for recruitment, data collection and interactions with American Indian communities.
  • If an application is accepted by CAICH, a letter documenting matching funds will be provided for internal submission.
  • Interested investigators should submit our on-line application, located here.
