Photo Tour of the Biochemistry Department

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is primarily located on the fourth floor of Wahl Hall (building seen to the right in photo-1), home to many of the basic science departments at KU Medical Center. The Medical Center, founded in 1905, now covers some 50 acres and includes more than 5500 employees, more than 2500 students, and, of course, thousands of patients and visitors to the Hospital (photo-2). One of the most modern facilities is the Lied Biomedical Research Building, opened in January of 1995.

The Lied building (to the left in photo-3) is home to several of the Biochemistry Department faculty. An enclosed atrium with a fountain connects the two buildings, with the former exterior of Wahl Hall east (photo-4) now enclosed. Faculty offices in the interdisciplinary Lied building now overlook this atrium (photo-5), with the lobby being used for many receptions and social activities by the Medical Center community.

The Electron Microscopy Facility is also housed in the Lied building. A covered walkway (middle in photo-6) crosses over 39th St. and connects to both the Archie Dykes Health Sciences Library (seen from Lied atrium in photo-7) and the Animal Research Facility. Some of the Department faculty and researchers are located a short distance across the city to the east at (photo-8) the Kansas City Veterans Administration Medical Center (KCVAMC).
