Department Information

Brief Overview

The Department is an integral part of the School of Medicine, as well as of the Graduate School, at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Sixteen full-time faculty members are engaged in active research and teaching. Lectures and laboratory experience are offered for students pursuing M.S., Ph.D., and M.D./Ph.D. degrees. In addition, post-doctoral research scientists, research faculty, and visiting faculty members contribute to the Department's activities. Strong collaborations exist with Basic Science and Clinical researchers within the KUMC community, with research groups elsewhere on a national and international level, and with established and emerging biotechnology industry.

Research Areas

General research areas pursued in the Department currently include, but are not limited to:

  • mechanisms of enzyme catalysis
  • recombinant DNA technology
  • transgenic mouse technology
  • physical and chemical characterization of protein and nucleic acid complexes
  • assembly of multicomponent biological systems such as microtubules
  • functional and dynamic aspects of phospholipids
  • regulation of gene expression
  • structural components of cell membranes, basement membranes, and microbial cell envelopes
  • polypeptide hormones and their membrane receptors
  • protein-protein interactions and the control of biological processes
  • immunochemistry
  • molecular biology of development
  • reproductive molecular biology
  • mechanisms of chaperone assisted protein folding
