Survivorship routine care clinics are an integral part of the care offered at the center.
At these appointments, the patients are monitored for recurrent breast cancer or new primary cancers, physical examination, maintenance of anti-hormonal therapy, treatment-related side effects of breast cancer including menopausal symptoms, bone health, and endocrine (hormone) imbalance. Assessment of quality of life (mood, sexuality, fatigue, lymphadema, weight management) will also be done as part of this visit.
Another important area of well-woman care addressed at this appointment includes identifying women with risk factors for cardiac disease and who underwent certain types of treatment for breast cancer- these women are provided with a referral to a Cardiologist or the Cardio-Oncology Clinic within the Breast Cancer Survivorship Center. Learn more about our Cardio-Oncology Clinic.
For women interested in learning more about their fertility options, a consultation with Dr. Sam Kim may be useful to learn about existing and new technologies. Learn more about our Fertility Preservation services.
To receive routine care post breast cancer, we have a few requirements of our patients. First and foremost, we see patients released from their oncologist at the KU Cancer Center only, e.g. told by their oncologist they no longer need to be seen due to a completion of treatment and active surveillance. Second, our patients are usually a minimum of two to five years post treatment.
If patients are looking for a new oncologist during treatment, we ask they call the KU Cancer Center Scheduling line (913-588-3671) and schedule a second-opinion appointment. We look forward to seeing these patients when they have been released into the Breast Cancer Survivorship Center.
Either referring physicians or patients can schedule new patient appointments. We ask that all new patients bring treatment history reports, recent labs and breast imaging reports to the initial appointment. These will be assessed during the first visit to make an effective survivorship care plan. To schedule an appointment please call 913-588-7715.
