Alumni of the KU School of Medicine are encouraged to join this growing program. In conjunction with the School of Medicine, the Alumni Association will match alumni physicians with incoming medical students. These alumni volunteers help recruit selected applicants and develop first-year students, helping them to succeed and prepare for their future in medicine! No matter your age, specialty or graduation year, you have something to offer one of these bright promising students. There is just a one-year commitment, and there are no geographical limitations!
It's been wonderful for me to be able to communicate with a doctor that graduated from KU Med. I feel that my relationship with Dr. Murphy is much more honest and open than all the other relationships I have with any other doctor. She has given me great advice on how to make it through med school and what to expect. She honestly has helped support me more than my family and friends. I think this is partially due to the fact that she has gone through med school and the people I am closest to have not. Therefore, she understands how I feel and why I feel the way I do. Our relationship is most like a mentoring friendship. I can always send her an e-mail when I am frustrated and she gives me the motivation I need to keep going. Of course, I also send her e-mails when I feel like things are going great. It's just nice to have someone to talk to who has been through what I am going through. – Meghan Hampton, School of Medicine Class of 2010
I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I've spent with my "mentees." Although they are younger than I am, I don't think of them as kids but as young peers. Seeing their dedication to their studies and ideas, tossed with a good dose of humor, makes me proud to be a physician. I realize I had that same dedication and determination to get where I am today. I see where I've come from and look forward to seeing where they're going. – Phyllis Steer, MD'85
