An Update on NCI Designation

The University of Kansas is making great progress in the quest for National Cancer Institute designation. NCI designation will signify that our academic cancer center has achieved the highest standards.

Here’s an update on KU's progress to date:

  • Recruited 5 top researchers who bring $1.7 million in NCI funding with them
  • Surpassed the fundraising halfway point on our way to the $92 million goal
  • Actively renovating Wahl and Hixon facilities on campus to create a complex devoted to cancer research

While recruiting, fundraising and renovation will continue during 2011, the major focus will be on perfecting the written grant due on September 25, 2011. Our team, led by KU Cancer Center Director Roy Jensen, MD, will be spending the next nine months writing and refining the application for NCI designation. Here are some of the key steps leading up to the application submission:

  • March 2011-- External Advisory Board visits
  • April 2011-- Cancer Center leadership will meet with NCI officials to review progress
  • July 2011-- Final draft of application should be completed
  • September 2011-- Official submission of application
  • January/February 2012-- NCI makes a site visit
  • May/June 2012-- Notified regarding approval

The phenomenal progress of our institution to this point has been an inspiration. We’ll keep you informed of key developments as we approach the official submission date. Thank you for your support during this exciting time.

Curry Ingredients May Hold the Cure for Cancer

The search for alternative cancer drugs led doctors to the kitchen. In studies, researchers found that Indian spices, such as turmeric, garlic, ginger, saffron and capsicum, have cancer-fighting qualities.

Additional Cancer Services for Southwest Kansas

The University of Kansas received a grant to help fight cancer in rural American Indian and Latino communities. This project should strengthen the KU Cancer Center's NCI application and bring much-needed services to southwest Kansas.

New Blood Test for Cancer

The KU Cancer Center has a new blood test that detects rare cells found to indicate cancer growth. This test is the only one of its kind in Kansas and can lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment.
